Slavic Soul Party comes to BVU!!

Listen here for a sample of Slavic Soul Party!

The Cultural ACES program is supposed to open the eyes of it's audience members to various types of performing arts - theater, instrumental music, vocal music, trios, acrobats, comedy and dance just to name a few.  I want students to take a look at the year long schedule of events, and pick ones that sound enjoyable to them, but also, not to close themselves off to something that could be great.

I did just what I ask of my students in January.  I attend the Association of Performing Arts (APA) Conference every January in New York City.  Within the 5 day conference, I have a chance to expose myself to different types of performing arts.  This year, I decided that I wasn't going to fill my schedule with events that I wanted to see, but open my eyes and do what I ask of the students to do; to go to events that I normally wouldn't attend, or ones that I would just file away as soon as it lands on my desk.

This is how I found Slavic Soul Party!  I looked at my massive book of events that were going on at the conference and saw that they were performing down the hall from where I was standing.  I walked down the hall and entered a tiny room.  I sat down and couldn't believe not only what I was hearing, but what I was seeing.

I saw a row of men; playing trombones, a rotary valve rlugelhorn, an accordion, snare drum, trumpet, a tuba, a big old drum, and a sax.  Not only where they playing the instruments, but they weren't just standing there; they were all moving around and all of them had these facial expressions that were to die for!  It made the performance so much more interesting and soon I found my self swaying back and forth in my chair and tapping my feet and clapping along.  They finished their 20 mins set, but the room was opened for the next session.  We all begged them to stick around and play more, and they did!

Slavic Soul Party! plays gypsy brass and soulful Balkin music.  They also have a dancer who came out and danced during certain songs, just to add flavor.

I was so impressed with what I was seeing, I did my best the next couple months to book them for the 06-07 season.  I wanted the BVU audience to feel the same that I did when I was exposed to Slavic Soul Party!  So come on in and enjoy the show! Tuesday, Sept 12th, 7:30pm in Schaller Memorial Chapel.
