2011 Season Underway

Women's Golf - Sep 04, 2011

Hello Everyone!

I've been getting a lot of slack for not updating the blog so I guess that means I'm long past due for writing!  I have lots of fun things to share as I have not written in a long time!

First of all, we have started our fall season.  The girls moved in 2 weeks ago and we have been practicing hard getting ready for our meets to begin.  We have almost doubled the size of our team this year which has been fun.  I will introduce our new girls in more detail in a later blog, but we welcome Ashley Miller, a transfer from Iowa Lakes Community College, originally from Storm Lake, Kassandra King from Fergus Falls, MN, and Jasey Zander from Madrid, IA.  Arinda Abbuhl has been a part-time golfer as she played volleyball for the Beavers the past two years.  She made the decision to be a full-time golfer so we have enjoyed having her this fall as well!

We had our first meet at Lake Creek this weekend.  We were able to host 9 teams and played very well. The weather did not cooperate with us as we would have liked so the tournament was rained out after 27 holes. Our team fired a 354 and were tied with Northwestern for 4th place after the first day.  Wartburg was leading the tournament with a 334, Central with a 344, and Iowa Western with a 346.

The team was excited to improve the 2nd day and we were all disappointed when we had to quit.  All of our girls finished 9 holes yesterday.  If we could double our 9 hole scores from yesterday, we would have shot 334 (which is what Wartburg ended up winning the tournament with.)  It was fun to play well but wish we could have finished and posted that score!  If we would have finished with a 334, our tournament score would have been a 688.  Last year we shot 818 at our home tournament.  So, we are definitely continuing to improve!  We travel to Waverly, IA next weekend for the Wartburg Invite.  I am very excited to continue and post a low score!  Check the blog for an update next weekend.

Thank you to everyone who has been sending emails, text messages, and good thoughts our way as we begin our season.  We really appreciate the support we get from people near and far! It's fun hearing from my teammates from when I played at BVU.  I actually got a message from one of my teammates mom's who was wearing her Beaver Golf T-Shirt all the way out in North Carolina on Friday to help cheer on the Beavers!  Thanks Kathy!

 Until next time,
GO BEAVERS!!!

Buenafication Day

Women's Golf - Apr 29, 2011

Yesterday was Buenafication day and the Golf team sure 'Buenafied'. The team started at Lake Creek in the morning and cleaned up around the clubhouse and on the range. We raked up so many leaves in the range nets, it was unbelievable! Guess that is what the wind out here does! After a few hours of cleaning up at the golf course, we took a break and had a little lunch on campus. It was a sunny day for once, so it was really nice!

At 1:00 we went out between Newell and Fonda and helped with the tornado clean up. It is amazing how many fields between here and there are still littered with debris from the storms a few weeks ago. There was tin all over! I am sure the damage is nothing compared to the damage from the storms down south but it is still so sad when you see houses, barns and fields just ruined from the storms. I heard on the news this morning there have been 281 deaths from the storms in Alabama and the surrounding area. Wow, I can't imagine what those families are going through. My prayers definitely go out to those people!

On a happier note, it is sunny again today so that is great. I am at the golf course and people are actually golfing! It's so nice to see people out and about after so many weeks of bad weather. I hope the trend continues. My brother has his home invitational this Saturday, so I am hoping there is nice weather for that.

The BVU Men's Golf Team is golfing today and tomorrow in Iowa City to wrap up their Conference Tournament. They are currently in 3rd place (going into their round today) and hope to move up to 2nd. Check the IIAC or BVU webpage to see how they play today and tomorrow. They are a talented team and I hope they play well!!

Until next time, GO BEAVERS!

That Went Fast!

Women's Golf - Apr 11, 2011

It seems like just yesterday I blogged saying it was so cold and it wasn't any fun to be outside.  Today I'm writing wishing we still had more meets to compete in.   We had a GREAT spring!  Here are some highlights!

-We shot 375 at Whispering Creek in Sioux City.  Fun course, tons of hills!  3rd place finish for the Beavers!
-We shot 360 at Landsmeer in Orange City.  Kylie Hammer had a personal best shooting 79.  This was good enough to tie for 1st place.  Unfortunately Kylie lost in a card back.  Great course, and a great day for golf.  3rd place finish for the Beavers!
-We had a 2 day tournament at Centenial Oaks in Waverly.  We shot 350 on Saturday.  Kylie Woodley missed a ten footer on 18 to shoot 80.  It was a personal best for her as well!  Great day for golf!  Sunday was beautiful and 80 degrees.  Besides the wind, it was awesome!  Kylie Hammer had another personal best, shooting 78.  We got 4th place out of 9 teams.  Go Beavers!

I'm at the golf course getting ready to watch my brother play his first meet of the season.  Another great day for golf.  I love this time of year.  Can't wait for summer!

Until next time, Go Beavers!

2 More Days

Women's Golf - Mar 30, 2011

Hello again,

Well, we've finally gotten outside this week and although it's been FREEZING, we've gotten some good practice in as we are preparing for our first meet in Sioux City on Saturday.  We played a few holes today and worked around the green.  We had lots of solid shots today which calms everyone's nerves a little bit.  It's hard when you haven't hit outside for 5 months and you know you have to play 18 holes and try to do your best in 2 days!  We will do great as we have practiced hard this winter and hit lots of balls in the gym.

It has been 35-40 degrees the past few days so we've been all bundled up outside.  It is supposed to be 60 degrees on Saturday so hopefully the day will be a little more manageable.  We play at Whispering Creek in Sioux City on Saturday so it should be a fun day.

Until next time,
Go Beavers!!

Practicing Outside

Women's Golf - Mar 25, 2011

Hello again,

Last week was Mid-Term week at BV so the golfers had lots of homework, papers, and tests to complete before Spring Break.  We have had a full week of Spring Break this week and the team took the week to rest and get ready to go for our spring season.  I was hoping it would be warm this week so the girls could golf at home and get ready for outside practice starting on Monday.

I woke up this morning to snow and it has continued to snow all morning!!  Hmm, this could be an interesting spring!  I just checked out the weather and it looks like more snow tomorrow and then sunny and 40-45 degrees all week.  Our first meet is on April 1-2 and I'm really hoping the snow is gone by then!  I remember playing in that tournament (in Sioux City) when I played and it snowed our whole way there, the whole time we warmed up and about our first 2 holes.  It ended up being a nice day by the time we were done!  Hopefully we can have a nice day Friday and Saturday!

Well my nights lately have consisted of watching the NCAA tourney on TV.  Did anyone see the Duke v Arizona game last night?  Wow, what a blow out!  Arizona sure came ready to play!  I love basketball so I really enjoy watching the games, but what I enjoy the most is getting to hear all the sappy stories about the players and what they've gone through to get where they are today.  Gets me every time!

Have a good Friday and enjoy the weekend!

More Snow

Women's Golf - Mar 07, 2011

Hello again.

Well the name of my last blog was 'Getting Closer' meaning getting closer to spring, golf, practice, etc.  I just looked at the weather and it says we'll have 14 inches of snow by Wednesday evening.  SERIOUSLY??  I'm not happy about this!  I am ready for spring, to see my golf clubs, to wear shorts, and to not have to think about snow anymore.

My brother lost to Carroll the other night, so they are done for the season.  They had a good season and he played well this year.  Luke is 7 years younger than me (he was in 5th grade when I graduated from high school) so it seems crazy he is almost done and ready to go to college.  He is ready for the golf season to start but isn't too upset about the snow because he is going on a snowmobiling/skiing trip to Wyoming with all of his buddies this week.  Sounds like fun!

My life right now consists of getting ready for the golf season to start and doing some projects around the house.  We are remodeling our upstairs bathroom at home so my house is a mess right now!  I think it's funny I am choosing to wait to go to the bathroom in a public place and making sure I go again in the public place before going home so I don't have to use our bathroom downstairs while our main bathroom is being remodeled!  Can't wait until this project is done!

Well I hope you are all saying lots of prayers for warm weather!

Until next time,
Coach Anderson

Getting Closer

Women's Golf - Feb 24, 2011

Well we're getting closer to spring.  We had some great days a week or two ago that melted lots of the snow.  You may have seen me out shoveling the snow off the big drifts in our yard to where the snow had melted already to get it to ALL melt faster!  I think I'm ready to see green grass!

One reason I know we're closer to spring is that it is high school district/state basketball this week.  My brother, Luke, (who is a senior at Storm Lake) plays Carroll at Fort Dodge tonight.  Carroll is a very good team, only losing 2 games this year.  Storm Lake however, is on an 8 game winning streak so it should be a good game.  I have my green and white on today and am excited to go cheer on the Tornadoes.

I have some good memories from the Fort Dodge gym.  I remember when I was in 8th grade I was a big Storm Lake Girls Basketball fan.  My best friend's sister (Emily Siefer) played so we went to lots of games.  They played at Fort Dodge to go to state that year.  One of the girls, I believe Melissa Keen, fell to the ground by the free throw line and shot it sitting down on the ground.  She made it at the last second to go to state! Fun memories!

Until next time, Go Beavers!

Spring Anyone?

Women's Golf - Jan 25, 2011

Is anyone else ready for spring?  I am!  Last week was one of the coldest weeks this year and I decided I am not meant to live in cold weather!! I think I'm ready for retirement so I can golf in Arizona all year round. (I only have about 40 years left!)

J-Term just wrapped up at BVU and students are starting to show up back on campus.  It's always fun having students back on campus.  I am a big Beaver Basketball fan and the games always have a bigger student section when J-Term wraps up.  Students back on campus means we are over half way through winter right??  I know there is always one big snow storm in March during the State Girls Basketball Tournament, but I am just praying it's a small storm and we can get to the golf course as soon as possible!

Lake Creek has had an interesting winter as a pipe burst in the clubhouse!  There was a lot of damage and they are working hard to get everything ready for spring.  I have not been out there yet, but those who have say it is pretty unbelievable!

I hope this blog finds you all doing well!  Think spring everyone!
