Flute Notebook

The purpose of the notebook is for you to have at your disposal a teaching resource that you can use after you have graduated from Buena Vista University.  This notebook should be a compilation of four years of study. You will need to purchase a three ring notebook that can be expanded over the four years.  Everything put in the notebook should be typed (nothing hand written will be accepted).  You will also need section dividers.  Feel free to "personalize" the way you organize your notebook!

Four Year Program of Study for the Flute at Buena Vista University
I.  Freshman Year

          A.  Tone Studies
                    The student will be expected to successfully complete the method book: 
                    Practice Book (vol. 1); Tone,
by Trevor Wye.
          B.  Scales and Arpeggios
                    The student will be expected to perform all the major scale studies and
                    arpeggios in the forms as written in the Fabric of Flute Playing, by
                    Martha Rearick, at a tempo of Quarter note equals 120.  This
                    performance of the scales (must be performed from memory) will take
                    place no later than spring semester jury of the freshman year.
          C.  Etudes
                   
The student will be expected to successfully complete the etude book: 
                    Melodious and Progressive Exercise for the Flute
(bk 1), by Robert
                    Cavally.  the student will need to adjust to being able to work on 2-3
                    etudes per week in order to complete the etude book in one year.
          D.  Articulation Studies
                    The student will be expected to be able to single tongue at a tempo of
                    quarter note equals 100-112, and double tongue at a tempo of quarter
                    note equals 120.  The method used for practicing these exercises will be
                    the Seventeen Daily Exercises, by Taffanel and Gaubert.
          E.  Vibrato Studies
                   
The student will be able to control the vibrato speed, depth, and fullness
                    of the vibrato.  Throughout the freshman year the student will work on
                    these different aspects until the desired results have been achieved. 
                   The method book used for study is the Practice Book (vol 1) Tone, by
                   Trevor Wye.  any additional material will be furnished by the teacher. 
                   Additional work with different patterns (threes, fours, sixes, etc.) may be
                   incorporated into the lesson.
          F.  Solo Literature
                    Solo literature may be drawn from the required list.  The student will be
                    required to work on two separate solo works each semester.  At least
                    one work will be performed during the semester departmental recitals,
                   and the other work will be performed in the flute class.  During the course
                   of the school year, one of the solos will be required to be performed from
                   memory.  This performance could take place in the form of the
                   departmental recital, flute class, and/or in a local or regional flute
                   competition.
          G.  Orchestral Excerpts
                    The student will be given an orchestral excerpt (to be performed in the
                    flute class) on a regular basis (1-2 per quarter).  the student will be
                    expected to have these excerpts performance ready for the flute
                    classes.  The student will be graded for each performance.  It will be the
                    student's responsibility to listen to a recording of the excerpt (recordings
                    of the entire work are available in the music listening lab in the main
                    library).

II.  Sophomore Year

          A.  Tone Studies
                   
The student will be expected to complete one or more of the following
                    method books by the end of the spring semester:

                    Marcel Moyse:  De La Sonorite
         
B.  Scales and Arpeggios
                   
The student will be expected to perform all three forms of the minor
                    scales (natural, harmonic, melodic), arpeggios, and the whole tone
                    scales from memory, by the spring semester jury, in sixteenth notes at a
                    tempo of quarter note equals 120.  The scale book is the Fabric of Flute
                    Playing,
by Martha Rearick.
          C.  Etudes
                   
The student will be expected to complete one or more of the etude
                    books by the end of the spring semester:
                    1.  Melodious and Progressive Studies for the Flute (bk 2), by Robert
                    Cavally.
                    2.  The Modern Flutist, by Karg-Elert
                    3.  Twenty-four Concert Selections in the Style of J.S. Bach
                    4.  Twenty-four Etudes, by Anderson, Op. 15, Op. 21.
          D.  Articulation Studies
                    The student will work out of one or more of these method books and
                    complete it by spring semester.
                    1.  Seventeen Daily Exercises for the Flute,  by Taffanel and Gaubert.
          E.  Vibrato Studies
                    The student will finish up any vibrato deficiencies that are lacking.
          F.  Solo Literature
                   
1.  The student will work on and perform two works each semester.  One
                    work will be performed on the departmental recital and the other work
                    will be performed in the flute class.
                    2.  The student will perform one of the works that he/she has worked on
                    during the course of the school year from memory.  this performance

The student will be able to control the speed, depth, and fullness of the
                   vibrato to accommodate the style of the work (German Baroque, French
                   Romantic, etc.) through the study of various solo literature, the student will
                   learn to adjust the vibrato to "fit" the work.
          F.  Solo Literature
                 
The student will work on music from the required list.  The student may be
                  required to perform a junior and/or a senior flute recital (if a music major). 
                  If the student is not a music major, then the student will be required to
                  work on two separate solo works each semester.  At least one work will   
                  be performed during the semester departmental recitals, and the other
                  work will be performed in the flute class.
          G.  Orchestral Excerpts
                 The student will be given an orchestral excerpt (to be performed in the flute
